In The Corpse Pose, his sophomore collection, poet Erik Campbell leads and follows us through the fast-paced, grainy static of global postmodernity, in which Zeus is overthrown by Google, and the only reliable deus ex machina to a suburban child’s call for help is the arrival of the Kool-Aid Man. Campbell’s The Corpse Pose understands the hard certainties of flux and decay―holding them at bay with a rueful, yet tender, nostalgia for the artful and elegant whimsies of anachronism.

This collection of poems immediately leaps to the front of my mind as one of the better collections I have read in the last five years. Reminiscent of other favorite poets of mine, such as Bob Hicok and Dean Young, the work here is deftly crafted and precise in its choices and turns, so that its emotional heft seems to come out of nowhere and repeatedly knock you off your feet. Each poem contains at least one knockout line that will make you shake your head in disbelief at its profundity and measure of real-world truth. The collection is divided up into four unique sections that hold an intrinsic bond. The first contains poems of travel, the second is a long stream of consciousness piece that channels Dean Young extremely well, the third is a section of dry humor and irony that will have you laughing and awestruck in its language, and the fourth is a section about divorce that packs an intense emotional wallop. By the end of the book you realize that the entire book was a sort of cataloging of the disintegration of a relationship. In short, I loved this collection and will definitely recommend it to friends and colleagues. I know I will be returning to it again and again.Product details

If this book held only the poems about his father's death it would be worth the money. Campbell is a poet who pays attention to the killing details and presents them with intelligence and accuracy.
