I purchased “The Countess’ Captive” directly from the author at a book convention. I must admit that, like book one in this series, I was attracted by the cover art more so than the story itself. But once I began the story, I was hooked. “The Countess’ Captive” is a continuation from the first book and likewise drew me in … the further I progressed into it the less I wanted to put the book down. This is an absolutely wonderful series that I cannot recommend highly enough!The author’s character development is outstanding. I especially like Adelaide, the fifteen year old protagonist in both books. She is a very strong, very independent young girl in the Middle Ages but is and can be vindictive when she’s been done wrong. The love story first brought about in “The Fairytale Keeper”, although now a distance relationship, is built upon and expanded.
The new characters the author introduces are just as lifelike as all the rest. She reveals their personalities in a manner that in the end you feel as if you have known them all your life. Her characters become your friends. The story is one that details life, and its hardships, in the thirteenth century … a story that I was quickly able to pick up on from the first book. Cefalo has a gift of being able to place the reader in the scene so that often times thanks to her vivid descriptions, the reader can smell the smoke of the fires, feel the cold of the snow, hear the noises of loud revelers, and experience the sadness of not being able to do as one wishes because of being blackmailed.
Once again, Cefalo’s knowledge of the time period she writes is incredible. She notes the small details that most others never bother to research. I appreciate a writer who takes the time to research her topic, and as a Historian myself, I am very pleased with her attention to details and historical facts. She will draw you into her story from the very beginning as she weaves a tale of royal intrigue and deception. But more importantly her story reveals the heart of a young girl and her desire for the one she loves … and the extent she will go to in protecting not only that one but others of her family.
As in the first book, this one doesn’t end in a cliff hanger, but it does leave the door wide open to the next part of the story and I look forward to book three and the continuation of this series – please hurry with the next book. In the end, there is a happy for now ending, but once again I was disappointed to see the end of the story. “The Countess’ Captive” is a solid 5 star addition to a 5 star series that I would recommend to anyone who has a love of fairytales, the Middle Ages, and real romance.

Book 2 in The Fairy Tale Keepers Series, The Countess' Captive continues the story of Adelaide, her father, and Galadriel (once known as Cinderella). Adelaide, who also has the nickname Snow White, given to her by her mother as Adelaide's hair is black as a raven's and her skin is fair as can be, is leaving Cologne with her father and Galadriel against her wishes and heading to Bitsch, Galadriel's home, where Galadriel is a countess.
With her husband dead less than a year, Galadriel weds Adelaide's father Ansel who has been widowed barely a month. Adelaide despises Galadriel for this. All Adelaide wants to do is be back in Cologne with her betrothed, Ivo.
I enjoyed this mix of Cinderella and Snow White. Many other fairy tales were told along the way which made this novel even more interesting as I had not heard all of them before.
I also appreciated the mix of historical and fairytale genres. There were no magical fairy godmothers, although there were some very helpful birds.
There were lots of twists in the plot that kept the story fresh and interesting. The pace was moderately fast. This book should hold the interest of fairytale lovers of young adult and older. I gave it 4 stars out of 5.

I bought this and the previous book based on excellent reviews. However, I found them a little boring - too many long dreams described in detail, etc. I guess I just prefer a story that moves along.

What a great read! The book is a nice blend of historical fiction and fantasy with an imaginative storyline and richly developed characters. The author kept me engaged from beginning to end and left me wanting more.
This was a fun and quick read. The Countess' Captive picks up right after The Fairytale Keeper leaves off. Adelaide, her father and her mother's cousin, Galadriel are abandoning their home in Cologne after their home was destroyed. Adelaide has to give up everything to be with her dad and Galadriel. I do not like Galadriel and further in the book can not stand Lady Johanna.
This second book from the series of The Fairytale Keeper was very intriguing! It really captures your attention with her twists on fairy tales and attention to detail. You wont want to put it down. Definitely recommend and can't wait for the third one to come out!
